This programme of study aims to present students with:

different perspectives of
1. the environment,
2. environmental education/education for sustainable development,
3. the interaction between the environment and society,
4. sustainable development.

different environmental and educational philosophical perspectives

about/through/for approaches to ESD

various educational contexts within the formal, non-formal and informal sectors

experiences of different qualitative and quantitative research methods, and

opportunities to manage and evaluate change.

Moreover, each study unit offered will also have a very strong practical component providing prospective students with first hand experiences of current and prospective sustainable development issues.

The Course shall be open to applicants in possession of one of the following qualifications:

any first cycle degree with at least second class honours or
any first cycle degree and a minimum of three years鈥� relevant experience in a recognised sustainable development setting.

All applicants shall be required to demonstrate that they have the necessary aptitude and disposition to follow the Course with profit.

Professional aptitude and disposition shall be measured by means of a personal interview.

Applicants who obtain less than 50% for the professional aptitude and disposition criterion shall automatically not be admitted into the Course.

The maximum number of students that can be admitted into the course is 15 students.

When the number is so limited and the number of eligible applicants exceeds the number of places available, applicants shall be selected according to the following criteria, which shall be weighted as follows:

degree type and classification 鈥� 20%
experience in the area of the proposed study 鈥� 40% and
professional aptitude and disposition 鈥� 40%.

The interviewing board appointed by the Board of Studies shall be composed of at least three members.

This programme of study is governed by the General Regulations for University Postgraduate Awards, 2021 and by the Bye-Laws for the award of the degree of Master in Education for Sustainable Development under the auspices of the Centre for Environmental Education and Research.

The Master in Education for Sustainable Development will enable students to:

study issues related to ESD in practice and 'in situ' in different environmental realities
experience and compare different environmental, social, cultural, political and educational perspectives
access and critically evaluate ESD research
employ the skills and attitudes necessary to promote sustainable lifestyles
relate with other ESD professionals and civil society in the development of practical ESD research projects
employ a variety of teaching/learning methods: direct teaching, distance learning, open/negotiable learning and the use of information and communication technologies (ICTs)
apply skills and strategies in research methodology/inquiry, and
consolidate the expertise required to function as environmental educators in various contexts within formal, informal and non formal education sectors.
